Pet visits stimulate Betel
residents
By Roger Newman
Friday August 26, 2005
Interlake Spectator — The
Gimli Animal Shelter committee does more than care for cats and dogs.
Committee members bring shelter animals to the local Betel Home every second
Friday afternoon, providing both an interesting activity and companionship for
the home’s elderly residents.
“The residents thoroughly enjoy the afternoon,” says shelter volunteer Rod
Bjorklund who teamed up with colleague Sheila Plummer to ferry both cats and
dogs to the home on a recent Friday.
“It is a win-win situation for both the home and the shelter,” echoes Betel
executive Evelyn McBean. “The visits animate the residents, getting them talking
and laughing.”
Bjorklund said that besides lifting the spirits of the residents, the
twice-monthly visits help to raise the profile of the almost three-year-old
shelter at Gimli Industrial Park. The shelter has
become a major player in the East Interlake infrastructure, caring
and finding adoptive homes for stray and unwanted pets in the region from
Matlock to Riverton.
That requires money, especially since the shelter now has a new $28,000 building
that enables it to look after cats as well as dogs. Among other things, funds
are required for pet food, leashes, veterinarians, garbage bags and the
advertising of potential adoptions, 250 of which have been made since the
shelter opened.
Anybody wishing to make a donation or participate in the work of the shelter can
contact regional animal control officer Rene Granger at 389-3301 or shelter
committee chair Gail Kreutzer at 642-4452
