Interlake Spectator — Operating at near capacity, the Gimli Animal Shelter is in need of generous supporters this holiday season.
Animal Control Officer Rene Granger says the non-profit shelter is currently housing 10 dogs and four cats in its modern building opened last July at the Gimli
Industrial Park. That constitutes a full house of dogs with space remaining for a single cat.
“We’re almost always full, which means that I have to turn down people who want to bring animals to the shelter,” said Granger who is in charge of animal control for Dunnottar,
Winnipeg Beach, Gimli and Riverton.
He said crowded conditions would be eased if pet lovers would consider adopting the shelter’s present residents. The shelter obtains its only real revenue from adoptions, relying on this source of
“Our shelter is a home for the animals, but it is not the real home they need,” Granger said, adding that the adoption fee is $120 for a spayed or neutered and vaccinated pet. “Right now, we can offer pets in all shapes and sizes.”
For example, the animal control officer is looking for a home for “Scotty”, a three-legged collie who is back walking after adapting to his handicap. And for feline fanciers, there are four orange cats whose names range from “Fiona” to “Monsieur Nouvellehomme”.
To bolster intermittent revenues, the shelter and Gimli’s Mermaid’s Kiss Gallery are running a draw for two front row centre seats to Bryan Adams Jan.11 concert at Winnipeg’s MTS Centre. The draw will take place Dec. 22 at Mermaid’s Kiss for the concert package which includes an Adams DVD, five CDs and two logo T-shirts.
Tickets, at $5 or $3 for $10, are available at Mermaid’s Kiss, Tergesens, Amma’s Tea Room, the Gimli Credit Union and the shelter.
Granger also said donations are accepted year-round either by the Gimli Credit Union or by the shelter at Box
1344, Gimli Industrial Park, ROC-1B0. As well, he said, the shelter is always in need of volunteers to walk and exercise the dogs.
